about
The Distil Ennui Studio was founded in 2000 by London based photographer Alexander James. The studio encompasses a number of commercial practices ranging from advertising, fashion & spatial photography. With rights managed stock image licensing and fine art prints for commercial installations and private collectors alike. A solid track record has seen Alexander working with clients like the Microsoft Corporation, Peugeot, Hewlett Packard, Samsung, Versace, Shangri-La Hotels, Balenciaga, Chanel and Ermenegildo Zegna.
Alexander’s commercial practice encompasses the very latest in digital workflows. It is however important to note that his personal works are always presented ‘as-shot’ with no post production; seeing the process as cathartic rather than a critical one, and it is this dedication to ‘in camera’ purity that establishes a predominant focal point for his practice. Attempting to present the beguiling beauty of our everyday confinements; engaging art with key artistic, intellectual and political issues of our time without the use of sensationalism. Images whose essence is derived from the ordinary, displaced and the overlooked.
These works have been exhibited around the world including Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles and Sydney. Critical references have seen Alexander quoted in the LA Times as being ‘a minimalist Gregory Crewdson’ and in the New York Times as ‘Man Ray meets Jet Li’.
DISTIL ENNUI: definition. to extract the essence and beauty of life to appease world weariness.
