Art at Lloyds Club – Iconoclasts

Curator Katie Heller in association with Pertwee Anderson & Gold & Edel Assanti, Iconoclasts explores how artists have often looked to the past to shape the present, either assimilating or reacting against it. In this exhibition are selected a new breed of pre-eminent, contemporary British artists at the forefront of their field, whose work pays tribute to their predecessors whilst at the same time creating something entirely modern. The viewer is forced to see this evolution, to retrieve it from art history and bring it up to date. For the traditionalist this may at times be uncomfortable: for the more forward thinking we are simply breathing new life into the old.
Hosted at the Lloyds Club in Crutched Friars, a quarter of London steeped in history providing the perfect setting for this exhibition. The grade II listed building was built in 1616 by the Ambassador of France and the road Crutched Friars, known at The Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross, dates back to 1210. The club was formed in 1920, originally an establishment frequented by bankers and men of the city. This is the first time that the club is opening up to the public, inviting you to enjoy both the space and the art and if you so wish the food and wine.
And so it is in the heart of London’s financial center, as the very fabric of the World’s financial order appears to be unravelling, that we challenge the old guard while inviting our audience to question their values and ideals, and perhaps catch a glimpse of a different order.
Artists include Wendy Bevan, Jodie Carey, Gordon Cheung, Oliver Clegg, Nancy Fouts, Henry Hudson, Alice Instone, Alexander James, Anne-Marie James, Anthony Noel Kelly, Alexander Massouras, Laurence Owen, Alan Rankle, Martin Smith, Rebecca Stevenson, Bouke de Vries, Simon Ward and Masaki Yada.

Underwater ‘Swarm’ series continues
I have not been able to blog much for the past four weeks as I have been locking into the most intensive shoot. Underwater butterflies like you have never seen before. These beautiful specimens are shot underwater in moving flight created by tiny jets of water.

Stilleven, group exhibition 27th May to 25th June – Pertwee Anderson & Gold Gallery
excerpt from gallery website…. ‘Referencing early still life paintings, Stilleven ( Flemish for Still Life ) highlights artworks from a group of contemporary artists who, for this exhibition, have chosen still life as the subject of their artworks and in some cases harnessing modern technology to stunning effect.
Historically, still life painting presented a perfect opportunity to show off an artist’s aptitude in painting textures and surfaces in great detail. Foods of all kinds laid out on a table, silver cutlery, pottery, intricate patterns, subtle folds in tablecloth’s and flowers were the frequent subjects of choice. Stilleven brings together the work of contemporary artists whose interests lie in elevating their subjects, elegantly and beautifully but always with a nod to memento mori.’
For the first time I will be showing ten pieces together from the underwater Vanitas series, alongside works by Simon Ward, Laurent Craste, Christos Tolera and Nancy Fouts.

Nancy Fouts opening ‘Un-Think’ at Pertwee Anderson & Gold
Last thursday saw the second opening at Soho’s new gallery Pertwee Anderson & Gold. As I walked up a sunny Bateman Street the crowd outside was already in full flow. A black funeral hearse parked outside set an interesting tone, it contained a simple wooden coffin aside a floral tribute made to our beloved ‘bastard’ that stopped me in my tracks nearly as quickly as the parking clamp that the hearse had acquired.
I saw the galleries first show, Kate MccGwire’s ‘Host’ where the interior of the space was pulled into dark & natural matt colors which accommodated her work so beautifully; but now as I walked in the space had undergone a dramatic transformation which was set in fresh light tones.
This show ‘Un-Think’ by Nancy Fouts was an installation and exhibition of artworks, and so many of them you really had to work to take it all in. The lighting in the space made each piece look formidable and you immediately picked up on a palpable delight in the air with people milling around these delicate works.
Nancy has taken everyday objects and created a wonderful interaction with nature, integrating them in a cheeky and thoughtful way that just makes you smile. Pears soap with opaquely seen inner razor blades, cracked yet still illuminated lightbulbs with charismatic mice breaking out, tall ships powered by banknote, leaf & butterfly sails, Möbius strip scissors ; her choice of subject spread far and wide to even include hand grenades, religious icons and false teeth.
I think the scale very much played on the viewers interpretation of these works; re-igniting a childhood lost, for me was the key. Great art has to unlock the valves on emotions and feelings and this just did it. With each piece being so perfectly scaled and beautiful, as if it were playing a star role in an epic tale; you could just see yourself aged 10 walking around with this treasure hidden in your school bag or tucked away in a secret hiding place. I have never contemplated theft and I am certainly not advocating it, especially art! but there was something of the artists cheekiness ebbing through from the works to me. Perhaps if I just hid one of the pieces behind a pedestal…. just wonderful feelings to experience while encountering art; Bravo.
The show is on until 12th May, the gallery team were helpful, sharp and very well informed and I think their arrival has lifted the game for the better on the London Art scene.
