Image from inside 'Renaciendo'. (Re-Born)
An exhibition of recycled sculptural works, large format PhotoGram (camera-less) photography and a state of the art lighting system that was hand fabricated by the artist and donated for public bequest to the Convento de los Carmelitas; the last standing Baroque structure left standing in Spain.
The building had remained closed to the public for over 170 years, the artist worked to bring this project to life and revive this important heritage site.
'Reborn' is an outdoor exhibition of sculpture, lighting & photographic works inside the Baroque architecture of the last Carmelita convent to remain standing in Spain.
The use of this building for the exhibition serves as a poetic and timely testimony to the vitality of our natural world and its importance in our cultural life.
The convent has been closed and abandoned for over 150 years, resulting in the permanent deterioration of its structure; artist Alexander James Hamilton mobilised the local community to support its conservation in order to prevent further ruin and promised the reopening of the space, a building that once formed the Convent of the Carmelites.
The exhibition proved to be a monumental task for the artist, who worked exhaustively to bring the site back into use. The artist also handcrafted a standard museum lighting system by recycling aluminium waste from the town of Budia that was destined for landfill.
The exhibition and the framework of the 'Reborn' project became the starting point for a subsequent collaboration with the University of Valencia and the University of Alcalá to work together on the complete and respectful restoration of the site in the coming years.
