A pro bono photography project producing specialist in camera effects without post production
Author: Distil Ennui | Post Date: 30-01-2021Back in 2008 I was contacted by The Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN). The church started in 1987 with a handful of members, but has since become one of Nigeria’s most influential churches, attracting over 50,000 people to its weekly Sunday services at the headquarters in Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos.
They were looking for pro-bono support from a photographic artist to create images for an advertising campaign across three continents titled FaithActsNow.com. The reason I was approached was because of my reputation for being able to sketch and shoot 'in camera' without the need for heavy post production which back then was an expensive enterprise.
Three scene concepts were devised from the scriptures and old testament; they were - Peter's Walk On Water, The Woman With The Issue Of Blood and Four Mens Faith. below are the original sketches I made, along with the final captured phototgraphs shot on medium format film. The only post production in these images is in the last image where the ropes were added digitally, the rest is all seen as shot.
I am always open to community projects and the brief was so interesting, knowing that the behind the scenes work would be the pillars that these images would be built on. From making a shoreline pedestal so the model could appear to be walking on water without digital trickery, this image actually happened exactly as you see it. This made the project a lot of fun to work on, and, regardless of your religious beliefs a worthy cause to get involved with.
NOTES.... You can view another community project titled 'Renaciendo' (2019-Ongoing) where I rallied the local community of a remote mountain village to help restore & reopen the last standing Baroque Carmelitas Convent standing in Spain, closed to the public for over 170 years.
