As digital reproduction and AI-generated images become like nano-plastics seen just about everywhere, the appeal of collecting unique, hand-crafted artworks has never been stronger. A one-of-a-kind photographic print offers more than visual appeal as it embodies the artist’s intent, rarity and the increased investment potential of a truly singular piece by challenging the ideas concerning the spiritual and economic valuation of artworks and to create an exciting tension between photography's individual present and relinquished, reproducible past.

Photography is of course viewed as a reproducible medium, yet artists who embrace singularity in their process are challenging this notion, elevating their work within the fine art worlds discourse in the process. My approach in creating sculptural scenes entirely underwater and capturing them on large format analogue film ensures that each print carries the weight of truly unrepeatable works. There is no digital manipulation, no composites, just a decisive moment sealed in time.
This rarity is further reinforced by the absence of editions in my work something I embraced back in 2013. Unlike limited edition prints, a truly unique photographic print becomes an artefact of singularity. It holds the same level of exclusivity as a painting or a sculpture, aligning with the traditions of fine art collecting. I have previously written about Essential Tips for Collectors on Collecting Photography, which expands on this philosophy and my reasoning behind it.
Collectors are drawn to unique works because they represent an unrepeatable act of creation. The knowledge that no other person will own the same piece enhances the emotional connection between the collector and the work. This is particularly powerful in my practice, where water itself acts as an unpredictable collaborator. The way it shapes light, texture and movement. It does this in ways that can never be replicated.
Additionally, the conceptual significance of unique prints aligns with my themes of impermanence and transience, revitalising the Vanitas tradition so deeply rooted my work. Just as life’s moments cannot be repeated, neither can these works.

From an investment perspective, collectors understand that scarcity drives value. While high volume reproductions can saturate a market and diminish desirability, unique prints hold their prestige indefinitely. Museums, galleries, and serious collectors often prioritise acquisitions of singular works, knowing that their rarity ensures long-term significance.
Historically, the most sought after photographic pieces have been unique prints, whether through early photographic techniques such as daguerreotypes or contemporary experimental processes.
I understand that as the art world becomes increasingly digital, the rarity of a one-of-a-kind physical print gains even greater traction. I have also written a guide to investing in fine art photography, discussing the potential of collecting photographic art as an investment.

For artists, the decision to create unique works is in fact a profound commitment to artistic integrity. It resists the commercialisation of endless reproduction and maintains the purity of artistic intent. My photographic process involves building each scene underwater, capturing it on analogue film plates, and producing only a single print, this ensures that every piece is an original testament to my vision.
Of course I appreciate the collector who is interested in my earlier pre-2013 prints that were in fact released in editions, these have been very important in helping me formulate my firmly held principles of today. Free free to explore collections such as ´Vanitas´, ´Swarm´ & ´Tokyo Taxi´.
Collectors who invest in unique prints are acquiring a period of my lifeline that cannot be replicated, I could work for months on single a piece. In an era where the art market is flooded with limited editions and digital prints, owning a one-of-one piece is a definitive statement of appreciation for provenance, rarity, and authenticity of how that artwork came into being.
All Unique works that leave the studio also carry an NFC encrypted authentification tag that can be scanned with any web enabled mobile phone to reveal the artworks full history & provenance, developed with the kind support of 123Automate.it .
For those seeking to build a collection that stands the test of time, the significance of unique works cannot be overstated, they embody the very essence of what makes fine art so valuable and endearing.
